The wild coast of the Cap d’Antibes along the Sentier des Douaniers: umbrella pines, white rock and open sea

The Sentier des Douaniers — Cap d’Antibes Coastal Path

The old customs officers’ path — locals call it the Tire-Poil — hugs the wild side of the Cap d’Antibes between Plage de la Garoupe and the gardens of the Villa Eilenroc. No cars, no buildings for long stretches: just limestone, pines, and the open Mediterranean. It is, by common consent, the finest walk on this coast.

The route

Count around five kilometres and roughly two hours at a contemplative pace, waymarked and maintained, with handrails and steps on the exposed passages. The classic direction starts at the Garoupe beach and ends near the Villa Eilenroc, from where a short road walk or bus returns you towards town.

The path also gives you the Baie des Milliardaires — the Billionaires’ Bay — the anchorage on the eastern flank of the Cap, below the great villas, where the largest yachts settle for the summer. From the path you look down on them; it is the closest most of us will get, and by far the better view.

The path closes in heavy seas or high winds — respect the barriers, waves do sweep the rocks.

Make a day of it

Go early with water, a hat and swimwear: several rocky inlets along the way are perfect for a swim you will remember. In spring the headland is covered in wildflowers; in autumn the light is at its sharpest.

From the old town, the Garoupe trailhead is a short taxi, bus or seaside walk via the Salis beach — an easy morning out from any of our houses.
